For decades, Korlebu Teaching Hospital has been touted as the  leading medical facility in Ghana. Its prestige is unmatched, and it has long been revered as the crown jewel of the country’s healthcare system. Korlebu’s history, spanning over 90 years, has cemented its status as a leading center of care, not just for routine medical services but also for the most complex and life-threatening conditions. It is the hospital that many Ghanaians see as the last hope, where advanced treatment and cutting-edge medical knowledge are assumed to be readily available.

But the question being asked now tends to be: Is Korlebu still the leading hospital it once was? Or is its reputation more a product of its storied past than its present reality?

The question of whether Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s once outstanding reputation is still deserved is not easily answered. Opinions vary widely. Some believe it remains the best medical facility in the country, while others argue it has become one of the worst, pointing to examples of incompetence, neglect, and corruption among staff to support their claims.

Personally, I went to Korle Bu as a patient, not as a journalist, entering one of its many departments with no intention of investigating anything. But as events unfolded during my treatment, my journalistic instincts kicked in. It became clear that many things had gone wrong within the hospital that the public—and perhaps the media—had yet to uncover. My own experience revealed troubling signs that Korle Bu is indeed at a critical crossroads, facing serious challenges that could determine its future.

I will share the details of my experience in a forthcoming article, but for now, it’s important to set the stage with some background on what’s really going on at Korle Bu today.

A Legacy of Excellence

Established in 1923 by Sir Gordon Guggisberg, Korlebu was initially conceived as a symbol of the country’s commitment to providing modern healthcare to its citizens.

Over the years, it has grown into the largest teaching hospital in Ghana and West Africa, attracting medical professionals from across the continent. It boasts an array of specialized services, including cardiothoracic surgery, renal care, neurology, and oncology. With such credentials, it’s no surprise that for generations, Ghanaians have viewed Korlebu as the ultimate destination for quality healthcare.

The hospital’s connection to the University of Ghana Medical School further adds to its stature, as it serves as the primary training ground for the country’s future doctors and medical professionals. Many of Ghana’s top specialists have passed through Korlebu’s halls, providing more evidence of its reputation for professionalism and expertise.

Behind the Facade: The Current Reality

Despite its reputationn̈ as the best hospital in Ghana, there are persistent concerns that Korlebu is no longer living up to its celebrated status. Patients and healthcare professionals alike have raised issues about deteriorating infrastructure, long wait times, and insufficient resources. Stories of patients being unable to receive urgent treatment due to equipment shortages or lack of space are all too common, calling into question whether the hospital can still claim to be the best.

Moreover, while Korlebu remains a hub for specialized care, Ghana’s healthcare landscape has evolved. Other hospitals, such as the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi and the Tamale Teaching Hospital, have made significant strides in providing high-quality care, offering patients more options than they had in the past. The rise of private healthcare facilities, which often provide faster and more personalized services, has also shifted the balance of power.

The Human Element: Doctors and Nurses on the Frontline

One area where Korlebu continues to stand out is the caliber of its medical staff. Many of Ghana’s most skilled doctors and nurses still work within its walls, and the hospital’s teaching environment ensures that there is always a fresh influx of talent. But even here, challenges loom large. Overworked staff, inadequate pay, and a lack of modern equipment are common complaints that threaten to undermine the quality of care.

Doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers at Korlebu are often stretched thin, tasked with handling large numbers of patients with limited resources. While their dedication is undeniable, the strain they endure is becoming increasingly unsustainable.

Korlebu’s Future: Reform or Decline?

The question of whether Korlebu remains Ghana’s best medical facility is not just a matter of prestige; it’s a question that cuts to the heart of the nation’s healthcare system. Can the hospital reform and adapt to modern challenges, or will it be overtaken by newer, better-equipped facilities?

Some argue that Korlebu’s legacy should be the foundation for its future transformation, urging the government to invest in upgrading its infrastructure, increasing funding for equipment, and improving working conditions for staff. Others believe the hospital’s reputation has already been eclipsed, and that it can no longer claim the top spot in Ghana’s healthcare hierarchy.

As Ghanaians continue to seek the best care for their health, Korlebu Teaching Hospital stands at a crossroads. Whether it will continue to hold its place as the nation’s premier medical facility depends on how it responds to the challenges of the present—and whether it can recapture the excellence that once made it the pride of Ghanaian medicine.
